San Diego State University ASSESSMENT TOOLS FOR VIETNAMESE PARENT CONSENT FORM Principal Investigator: Giang Pham, Ph.D. CCC-SLP | Approved Minimal Risk 15-Feb-2021 |
INTRODUCTION: We are asking you to participate in this research study because your child speaks Vietnamese, is between 3 to 9 years old, and lives either in the United States (US) or Vietnam. We want to build assessment tools for the Vietnamese language that can be used with children in both countries. This study is funded by the National Institutes of Health in the US and will include 400 children. The reason you may want to participate in this study is to help create tests to measure language ability for Vietnamese children. The reason you might not want to join this study is that you will need to spend some of your time.
STUDY PURPOSE: Though there are 1.5 million Vietnamese people in the US and 90 million in Vietnam, there are no standardized tests for the Vietnamese language. This study will find out how children develop Vietnamese as a single language (in Vietnam) or while learning English (in the US). Results will help build tools to assess Vietnamese language development and identify children who may need extra support.
STUDY TASKS: Your child will complete the study in 90 minutes, which can be divided into 2 to 3 sessions. In each session, your child will speak in Vietnamese to repeat words or sentences, answer questions about pictures, and tell short stories. If your child is in the US, they will also complete language tasks in English. Your child can participate in the study at school during the school day, or at home or the university center outside of school hours. Also, you (parent) will complete a survey for 30 minutes about your child's development and language use. You can complete this survey in writing, by phone, or in person. Your child's teacher will complete a short survey about your child's language skills for 10 minutes.
BENEFITS: There are no direct benefits for you to participate in this study. However, this research may have long-term benefits as we better understand language development in Vietnamese children and find ways to improve assessment and intervention for children with language disorders.
RISKS: The risks to your child will be minimal and not exceed those that occur in everyday school life. Your child may become tired or have trouble paying attention. If so, we can provide breaks, verbal encouragement, and small prizes (stickers). If your child participates in the study at school, they may miss time in class. We will work with your child's teacher when making the schedule so that your child does not miss the same subject repeatedly. To not single out your child, we can have multiple testers available to call a small group of children from the same class at once. If you do not want your child to miss time in school, you can ask for your child to participate at home or the university center outside of school hours. In completing the parent survey, you may feel uncomfortable or uncertain of how to respond to a question. A research team member will help you to complete the survey by phone or in person at a time that is convenient for you. We can also send you a written survey and have a research team member follow-up with you by phone or in person. Finally, there is always the risk of a breach of privacy or confidentiality (see Confidentiality).
ALTERNATIVES: You may choose not to participate in this study, or to stop your participation at any time.
CONFIDENTIALITY: You and your child's identities will remain confidential to the extent allowed by law. All materials will be coded, and personal information will be kept secure on a password protected computer or in a filing cabinet in a locked room. Your child's language will be audio- and video-recorded for analysis purposes. Identifying information will be removed from all data, and this identifying information, including audio and video files, will be destroyed after six years. Results of this study may be used for publication or presentation at scientific meetings. If your individual results are discussed, your identity will be protected by using a code rather than your name or other identifying information. The information that is stored only with the code could be used by another researcher for future studies without additional informed consent.
RESULTS: We will not contact you with results of this study after this study is completed.
VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION: You do not have to participate in this study. Even if you agree to participate, you can decide later to stop your participation. Your decision will not affect your child's standing in school or have any other negative outcome. If you stop participating, the information collected before you stopped will be included in the study. However, you have the right to request that your data be deleted. To make this request, please contact the principal investigator (see Contact Information).
COST: If your child participates at school during the school day, it will not cost you anything to participate. If you ask for your child to participate at the university center, you will be responsible for any transportation costs.
PAYMENT: Parents will receive a $20 gift card for completing the parent survey. Your child will receive small prizes (stickers).
